Removable dentures in NZ: types, cost and choosing the right one

Short answer
Removable dentures replace missing teeth and can be taken out for cleaning. Full (complete) dentures replace all the teeth in an arch, and partial dentures replace some teeth and clip onto the ones that remain. In New Zealand the cost depends on the type of denture, the materials and the dentist or clinical dental technician, so get a quote for the specific option you are considering.
Full (complete) dentures
A full denture replaces every tooth in the upper or lower arch. The teeth are set into a gum-coloured acrylic base that is shaped to fit your gums closely, with the tooth position and bite set up for a natural look and comfortable chewing.
Partial dentures
A partial denture fills the gaps where some teeth are missing and is held by clasps on the remaining teeth. There are three common types:
- Acrylic partials: economical, and easy to add a tooth to later if more teeth are lost.
- Chrome cobalt (Co-Cr) partials: a thin, strong cast metal framework that is more stable and covers less of the mouth.
- Flexible partials: metal-free, with gum-coloured clasps that blend in.
Immediate dentures
An immediate denture is made before the teeth are taken out, so you leave the appointment with teeth on the same day. As the gums heal and shrink, it usually needs relining or replacing.
Implant-supported dentures
Dentures can also clip onto dental implants, or be replaced by a fixed full-arch bridge, for much more stability. See implant-supported dentures vs regular dentures.
What affects the cost of dentures
- Full or partial, and one arch or both.
- The material: acrylic, chrome cobalt or flexible resin.
- The quality of the denture teeth, and how much hand finishing and gum characterisation is involved.
- Whether extractions, an immediate denture or later relines are needed.
- Whether implants are used.
In New Zealand, dentures are provided by dentists and by clinical dental technicians, who are registered to make and fit dentures directly for patients. Ask for a written quote that lists what is included.
What makes a better denture?
A good denture fits closely, has a stable, even bite, and has teeth whose shape, size and shade suit your face. “Designer” or premium dentures typically use higher-grade denture teeth and more detailed shading of the gum area for a more natural look. Digital workflows can also help, as dentures can be designed from scans, including a scan of an existing denture you are happy with.

Frequently asked questions
How long do dentures last?
Dentures wear and the mouth changes shape over time, so most dentures need a reline or replacement after some years. Regular check-ups help keep them fitting well.
Which type of partial denture is best?
Acrylic is economical and easy to add to, chrome cobalt is thinner, stronger and more stable, and flexible partials are metal-free with gum-coloured clasps. The right choice depends on your remaining teeth.
Can dentures be made from a digital scan?
Yes. Dentures can be designed digitally from scans, including a scan of an existing denture, and then milled or 3D printed.
Who makes dentures in New Zealand?
Dentists and clinical dental technicians provide dentures to patients, and dental laboratories make them to their prescription.
