How much does a dental bridge cost in NZ? Crown and bridge prices, lifespan and care

Short answer

How much does a dental bridge cost in NZ? A three-unit bridge that replaces one front tooth typically costs $3,600 to $4,500, and a single all-ceramic crown $1,500 to $1,780, according to the New Zealand Dental Association’s latest fee survey (late 2023, including GST). Fees have risen since and vary between clinics, so ask for a written quote. With good care, most crowns and bridges last 10 to 15 years or more.

These are the most recent published New Zealand figures: the middle half and the median of the fees dentists reported in the New Zealand Dental Association (NZDA) Fee Survey, carried out in October and November 2023. They are normal fees for uncomplicated treatment and include GST.

TreatmentMiddle half of NZ feesMedian
All-ceramic crown, NZ$1,500 – $1,780$1,600
All-ceramic crown, Wellington$1,590 – $1,800$1,680
Three-unit front-teeth bridge, NZ$3,600 – $4,500$4,000
Three-unit front-teeth bridge, Wellington$3,600 – $4,700$4,484
Root canal on a molar (crown extra)$1,200 – $1,650$1,500
Acrylic partial denture, one tooth$900 – $1,300$1,100

Dental crown costs in Wellington ran slightly above the national figures. Clinic price guides published in 2026 commonly show $1,200 to $2,500 per crown, so expect a current quote to sit above the 2023 survey. A bridge is priced by the unit: each crown on a supporting tooth and each false tooth is one unit. For a rough dental bridge cost estimate, count the units, allow close to your clinic’s crown fee for each, and add any treatment needed first.

What is a dental crown or bridge?

A crown is a custom-made cap that covers the whole visible part of one tooth. A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth: a false tooth, called a pontic, is joined to crowns on the teeth either side of the gap, or held by dental implants. Both are fixed in place and made by a dental laboratory from a scan or impression of your teeth. Read more about the types of dental bridge, including Maryland and cantilever bridges.

Crowns and bridges are made in several materials. The material affects the price, the look and how much chewing force the work can take.

MaterialStrengthAppearanceBest for
Monolithic zirconiaVery highTooth-coloured, slightly opaqueMolars, bridges, people who grind
Layered zirconia or E.maxHighMost naturalFront teeth
Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM)HighGood; a dark line can show if the gum recedesLonger bridges
Gold alloyVery highGold-colouredBack teeth

The strongest dental bridge materials are monolithic zirconia and metal, either porcelain-fused-to-metal or gold. Metal dental bridges are still made, mainly for long spans and back teeth, but most bridges in visible areas are now metal-free. For a closer comparison, see zirconia vs porcelain vs E.max vs gold crowns.

How to get a crown or bridge: the procedure and how long it takes

  1. Assessment and quote. Your dentist examines the tooth, takes x-rays and treats any decay, gum disease or infection first. A tooth that needs a root canal has it before the crown.
  2. Preparation appointment, usually 1 to 2 hours. The tooth or teeth are shaped, a digital scan or impression is taken, and a temporary crown or bridge is fitted.
  3. Lab work, often one to two weeks. A dental technician designs the crown or bridge in CAD software around your bite, mills it in zirconia, presses it in E.max or casts a metal framework, then shades, glazes and checks it by hand.
  4. Fit appointment, usually 30 to 45 minutes. Your dentist removes the temporary, checks the fit and bite, and cements or bonds the final crown or bridge.

Some clinics mill single crowns in one visit with a chairside machine. Bridges, and front-tooth work that needs hand-layered porcelain, are usually made by a dental laboratory.

Looking for crown and bridge dental labs near you? Patients do not usually deal with a lab directly: your dentist chooses the laboratory and sends it the case. Universal Dental Laboratory is a crown and bridge lab in Blockhouse Bay, Auckland, making zirconia, E.max, PFM and gold crowns and bridges for dental clinics across New Zealand.

How to use and care for a crown or bridge

Treat a temporary gently: avoid sticky and hard food on that side, and slide floss out sideways rather than pulling it up. Once the final crown or bridge is fitted you can eat normally, but avoid biting ice, hard lollies, pens or packets, which can chip porcelain.

Plaque collects under the false tooth of a bridge, where ordinary floss cannot reach from above. To floss a dental bridge:

  1. Thread the floss under the false tooth with a floss threader or a stiff-ended floss such as Superfloss.
  2. Wrap the floss around the side of each supporting tooth and move it up and down just under the gum.
  3. Slide it along the underside of the false tooth, then pull it out to the side.
  4. Add a small interdental brush or a water flosser if your dentist or hygienist recommends one.

Most crowns and bridges last 10 to 15 years, and many last longer. Dental crown longevity and dental bridge lifespan depend on the material, your bite, whether you grind your teeth, and above all on keeping the supporting teeth free of decay and gum disease. Regular check-ups let your dentist catch problems at the edge of a crown early.

Tips & gotchas

Dental implants or a bridge? A bridge is usually cheaper up front: the NZDA survey medians were $4,000 for a three-unit bridge against about $5,960 for a single implant ($3,000 for the surgery and $2,960 for the crown). An implant does not need the neighbouring teeth to be crowned and can last longer, so it may cost less over a lifetime. Compare the options in replacing a missing tooth: implant, bridge or denture.

Dental bridge vs dentures: a bridge is fixed and feels like natural teeth. A partial denture comes out for cleaning, costs less (median $1,100 for a one-tooth acrylic partial) and can replace several teeth in different places at once.

Frequently asked questions

Is a dental bridge cheaper than an implant in NZ?

Usually, at first. In the New Zealand Dental Association’s 2023 fee survey the median fee was $4,000 for a three-unit bridge and about $5,960 for a single implant and crown. An implant does not involve the neighbouring teeth and may last longer, so compare the long-term cost with your dentist.

How long does a dental crown or bridge last?

Most crowns and bridges last 10 to 15 years, and many last longer. Good daily cleaning, regular check-ups and a bite splint if you grind all help them last.

What should I do if my dental bridge falls out?

Keep the bridge, rinse it, store it safely and call your dentist. Do not glue it back yourself. If the bridge and the supporting teeth are sound, it can often be cemented back in place.

Can a chipped crown be repaired instead of replaced?

A small chip can sometimes be smoothed or repaired with composite resin. A large chip, a crack, a failed seal or decay under the crown usually means the crown needs replacing.

Do I need a crown after a root canal?

Back teeth usually do, because a tooth that has had a root canal becomes more brittle and can crack. Front teeth sometimes only need a filling. Your dentist will advise based on how much of the tooth is left.
