Full-contour and layered restorations
Choose full-contour restorations for strength and minimal preparation, or layered porcelain for depth and character in the smile zone.

What it is
A full-contour (monolithic) restoration is made from one solid material, usually zirconia or e.max, and finished with stain and glaze. A layered restoration has a strong core with porcelain built up by hand on top.
Full-contour vs layered
| Full-contour | Layered | |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | Very high, with no veneering layer to chip | High core; the porcelain layer can chip |
| Appearance | Natural with stain and glaze | Most lifelike depth and translucency |
| Preparation | Can be thinner | Needs room for the core and porcelain |
| Best for | Back teeth, bruxism, implants | Front teeth and high-aesthetic cases |

Frequently asked questions
Which should I choose for a single front crown?
A layered restoration usually gives the closest match for a single front crown, especially next to natural teeth with strong characterisation.
Can full-contour restorations look natural?
Yes. Multilayer zirconia and e.max, finished with stains and glaze, look natural in many situations, particularly on back teeth.
